Thought for the Day 12/25/2006

GET UP!
I saw an expert skater once, performing on the ice, and wondered how she learned to glide so gracefully and nice. I asked her how she got her skill.
She first began to frown, then smiled and said, “Why I got up whenever I fell down.”

I knew a note financier, whose riches were untold. I marveled at his mighty nerve in taking chances bold.Once when we were alone, I asked the rich man of the townthe secret, and his answer was, “Get up when you fall down.”

I heard a famous orator, whose ringing voice brought cheers, and then, in soft and touching tones, evoked a flood of tears.I asked this great man privately how I might win renown, and, like the rest, he told me to get up when I fall down.

“He is a genius,” is a phrase you often read and hear.It means, a man who plugs along with nerve to persevere. You may be awkward at the stunt, and act just like a clown, but if you want to win life’s race, “Get up when you fall down!”
Unknown

Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Hebrews 12:1-2

"Life is change. Growth is optional. Choose wisely."
-Karen Kaiser Clark

But speak the truth in love, as we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ. . .

"Being miserable is a habit; being happy is a habit; and the choice is yours."
-- Tom Hopkins

'Because you say, "I am rich, and have become wealthy, and have need of nothing," and you do not know that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked, I advise you to buy from Me gold refined by fire so that you may become rich, and white garments so that you may clothe yourself, and that the shame of your nakedness will not be revealed; and eye salve to anoint your eyes so that you may see.

Got any mountains you can't tunnel through?
God specializes in things thought impossible.

He can the true peace impart
In place of doubt and fear.

And He said to them, "Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts?See My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself; touch Me and see,
for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have."

Thought for the Day 12/18/2006

When it comes to helping others,
some people stop at nothing.
Anonymous

The commandments, "Do not commit adultery," "Do not murder," "Do not steal," "Do not covet," and whatever other commandment there may be, are summed up in this one rule: "Love your neighbor as yourself." Love does no harm to its neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.

Thought for the Day 12/15/2006

When you arise in the morning, give thanks for the morning light, for your life and strength.
Give thanks for your food, and the joy of living.
If you see no reason for giving thanks, the fault lies with yourself.
-Tecumseh, Shawnee Chief

HAVE FAITH

I don't know how one navigates this thing called life without having abiding faith in something.
Tavis Smiley

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen;
for by it the men of old received divine approval.

Go to the ant, O sluggard, Observe her ways and be wise, which, having no chief, Officer or ruler, prepares her food in the summer And gathers her provision in the harvest. How long will you lie down, O sluggard? When will you arise from your sleep?"A little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands to rest" -
Your poverty will come in like a vagabond And your need like an armed man.

Notice, we never pray for folks we gossip about, and we never gossip about the folk for whom we pray! For prayer is a great deterrent.

If you plant for a year, plant grain.
If you plant for ten years, plant trees.
If you plant for a 100 years, plant men.
If you plant for eternity, plant the word.

Listen then to what the parable of the sower means:
When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the seed sown along the path.

The one who received the seed that fell on rocky places is the man who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. But since he has no root, he lasts only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away.

The one who received the seed that fell among the thorns is the man who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke it, making it unfruitful.

But the one who received the seed that fell on good soil is the man who hears the word and understands it. He produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown."

Thought for the Day 11/23/2006

Be Thankful
Be thankful that you don't already have everything you desire,
If you did, what would there be to look forward to?

Be thankful when you don't know something
For it gives you the opportunity to learn.

Be thankful for the difficult times.
During those times you grow.

Be thankful for your limitations
Because they give you opportunities for improvement.

Be thankful for each new challenge
Because it will build your strength and character.

Be thankful for your mistakes
They will teach you valuable lessons.

Be thankful when you're tired and weary
Because it means you've made a difference.

It is easy to be thankful for the good things.
A life of rich fulfillment comes to those who are also thankful for the setbacks.

Some day, you will be wrestling with the great temptation, or trembling under the great sorrow of your life.
But the real struggle is here, now, in these quiet weeks.
Character cannot be made except by a steady, long continued process.
-- Phillips Brooks (1835-1893)

And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance;and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope;and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts...

Until you value your time, you will not do anything with it.
M. Scott Peck

By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him.In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.

Every tomorrow has two handles. We can take hold of it with the handle of anxiety or the handle of faith.
Henry Ward Beecher

But if God so clothes the grass in the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, how much more will He clothe you? You men of little faith!
And do not seek what you will eat and what you will drink, and do not keep worrying.
For all these things the nations of the world eagerly seek; but your Father knows that you need these things.
But seek His kingdom, and these things will be added to you.

Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past.
See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland.

Thought for the Day 10/23/2006

To go with the autumn season (and a requested repeat from previous years):

A lady had recently been baptized. One of her co-workers asked her what it was like to be a follower of Christ. She was caught off guard and didn't know how to answer, but when she looked around she saw a jack-o'-lantern on the desk and answered: "It's like being a pumpkin." The worker asked her to explain that one.

"Well, God picks you from the patch and brings you in and washes off all the dirt on the outside that you got from being around all the other pumpkins. Then He cuts off the top and takes all the yucky stuff out from inside. He removes all those seeds of doubt, hate, greed, pride, etc. Then He carves on you a new smiling face and puts His light inside of you to shine for all to see."

I'll never look at a pumpkin the same way again!

2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

Thursday, October 19, 2006

As for me, I said in my alarm, "I am cut off from before Your eyes"; Nevertheless You heard the voice of my supplications When I cried to You.
O love the LORD, all you His godly ones! The LORD preserves the faithful And fully recompenses the proud doer.
Be strong and let your heart take courage, All you who hope in the LORD.
Psalm 31:22-24

Do you ever fear that God doesn't hear your prayers?

David has to account for his impatience in these verses. He hastily assumed that God wasn't paying attention to his cries for help. He soon realized that God had heard his prayers and answered them in due time.

Today, don't become discouraged because a prayer has yet to be answered. Trust in God. This psalms tells us that the "Lord preserves the faithful". David ends this psalm with encouragement for anyone who is waiting for a prayer to be answered: "Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the LORD".

Thought for the Day 10/16/2006

From your hope and faith, decide on a definite major goal. Write it down. Commit it to memory. Make it the fixed star on which you chart your course to success. Then take action to make it come true.
Every success story with a happy ending starts with the words: “Once upon a time there was a man who hoped that some day …”
Yours must start out the same way.

When Yesterday Can Say Goodbye
When yesterday can say goodbye
And carry away her worn-out bags
Filled with broken promises
Broken dreams
And broken hearts
When tomorrow can wait outside the door
And keep her gifts ready
But politely wrapped
So as not to spoil the surprise
Then today can come
And sit
And hold you in her strong embrace
While she opens her own box of blessings
Unseen before
Lying buried in the shadows
Beneath yesterdays clutter.

What ought one to say then as each hardship comes? I was practicing for this, I was training for this.
- Epictetus (55-135 AD)

But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. "Do not fear what they fear; do not be frightened." It is better, if it is God's will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil. For Christ died for sins once for all.

See, I have refined you, though not as silver; I have tested you in the furnace of affliction. Isaiah 48:10

In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials.
These have come so that your faith - of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire - may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.

Thought for the Day 10/4/2006

I find the great thing in this world is not so much where we stand, as in what direction we are moving: To reach the port where God is, we must sail sometimes with wind and sometimes against it, but we must sail, and not drift, nor lie at anchor.

Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.

Thought for the Day 7/4/2006

The Bumblebee by Anthony N. Wade
Did you know that according to a theory of aerodynamics that the bumblebee should be unable to fly? The bumblebee's size, weight, and shape of its body, in relationship to its total wingspan, flying is technically impossible. The bumblebee, being ignorant of the technical theory, goes on and flies anyway and makes honey everyday.

You and I need to take a few lessons from the bumblebee. First of all, if the bumblebee were to look at its size, it would say "My body is too big for my wings, for that reason I am not able to fly." If it looked at its weight, it would say, "I'm too heavy, it is impossible for my wings to create enough lift for me to do the job I was created to do." If it looked at the contour of its body it would say "Forget it, it is scientifically impossible for me to do this."

My friend, the bumblebee is totally unaware of the impossibilities that say it can't do what it does, day after day. It goes against all the odds that say, "You should be a failure." "Look at you; aren't you a pitiful looking thing? You are overweight, your body is in pathetic shape; and you have the nerve to think you are going to fly." Who do you think you are a bumblebee? This kind of view never comes across the mind of a bumblebee. It doesn't know it's not supposed to fly.

Now, what's your excuse? Who or what is screaming at you that you can't possibly do what you desire to do? When are you going to look them in the face and say, "Watch me!" "I will overcome these odds, I believe I can fly." I don't care who or what is telling you that you can't, with God all things are possible.

It's time to make man's impossibility, God's possibility. Trust in Him.

Thought for the Day 6/26/2006

Psalm 34:11-14 Come, my children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the LORD.
Whoever of you loves life and desires to see many good days, keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking lies. Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.

We find, in this Psalm, that David has a lesson for us. It's about life and about living. He asks the simple question, "Who wants to live a good life?".

Most people desire to live a happy life. Yet, as we look around us, there is so much unhappiness in the world. Is it because we have lost the true meaning of "living"? Living is much more than just a mere existence. A true and joyful life has it's foundation in a relationship with God. David gives us some basics to begin our road of a happy life.

Respect, Love and Honor the Lord.
Watch your tongue.
Stay away from evil things.
Do good.
Seek Peace.

It's not that complicated, yet, it's so easy to forget.
May we all start remembering the simple things in life.

-Eberhard Arnold

1 Corinthians 12:12-13, 18 The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ. For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body - whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free - and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. But in fact God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be.

Thought for the Day 06/06/06

I don't get "preachy" in these Thoughts often, but on this day when rumor abounds on 06/06/06 today, I send this second Thought with love to you all, something a fellow believer wrote to warn us of the nearing of the end - May our Lord Jesus come soon!

The description of the Second Coming of the Lord Jesus Christ in the Bible is spoken of in terms which make the combined effects of 9/11, tsunamis, Katrina and the severe recent earthquakes sound like child’s play. The warnings we are given are astounding. "For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been from
the beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be. And if those days had not been shortened, no human being would be saved; but for the sake of the elect those days will be shortened
." (Matt. 24:21 RSV)

In light of these descriptions, it begs the question – "Why do so many fail to heed the warning?" People continue to live in sin as if this will not come to pass. Not surprisingly, the Scriptures provide us with the answer of why people do not heed the warning. Some people just assume that life was we know it will go on forever. They say "But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only. As were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of man. For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, and they did not know until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of man." (Matt. 24:36-39 NJB)

Others will dismiss the Second Coming as pure fiction. "First of all, do not forget that in the final days there will come sarcastic scoffers whose life is ruled by their passions. ‘What has happened to the promise of his coming?’ they will say, ‘Since our Fathers died everything has gone on just as it has since the beginning of creation!’" (2 Pet. 3:3-4) Other people fail to realize how terrible the Second Coming will be for those who are still serving sin. "For look, the Day is coming, glowing like a furnace. All the proud and all the evil-doers will be the stubble, and the Day, when it comes, will set them ablaze." (Mat. 4:1 NJB)

We certainly don’t want to be accused of trying to scare people into serving Christ. In the seven years we have been writing the Thought For the Day, we have never delved into this very important topic for this very reason. However, the warning from God is real and needs to be heeded. We would prefer to focus on the loving offer of forgiveness and salvation, and God's loving help in our daily lives. If that is not sufficient to motivate, perhaps the warning of impending judgment will do the trick. God tells us what to do. "And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commands all men every where to repent: because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world…" (Acts. 17:30-31)

God is shaking up the world to warn us. Let us believe in God and His Son, repent, be baptized and follow them in the way of Truth, love and joy. Our lives depend on it.

Thought for the Day 6/5/2006

Beautiful hands are the hands that do
The tasks that the Lord gave them to.
The homely tasks that, day by day,
Make life easier along the way
For other people; that wash and cook
And make of a house a comfortable nook
That folks like to come to; that scrub and scour;
That soothe and heal no matter what the hour.
Floors, clothes, and dishes, across our lands,
Are made clean again by beautiful hands.

Thought for the Day 5/30/2006

For attractive lips, speak words of kindness.
For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people.
For a slim figure, share your food with the hungry.
For beautiful hair, let a child run his or her fingers through it once a day.
For poise, walk with the knowledge that you'll never walk alone. God is always there.

-- Audrey Hepburn (1929-1993)

Proverbs 31:28-31 Her children rise up and bless her; Her husband also, and he praises her, saying:
"Many daughters have done nobly, But you excel them all."
Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, But a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised.
Give her the product of her hands, And let her works praise her in the gates.

Thought for the Day 5/29/2006

Psalm 127:1-2 Unless the LORD builds the house, They labor in vain who build it; Unless the LORD guards the city, The watchman keeps awake in vain. It is vain for you to rise up early, To retire late, To eat the bread of painful labors; For He gives to His beloved even in his sleep.

This psalm was written by Solomon to give us a better perspective on the purpose of our life.

In Solomon's time watchmen were kept around the city to guard it against enemy attacks. However, Solomon tells us that it is useless to put guards around the city if God is not watching over it.

We spend most of our waking hours "building" and "guarding" our lives. Most of our days are spent working to make ends meet and to make our lives better. It is so easy to get so caught up in this "building" process that we begin to miss the joy of living. Solomon tells us that unless we let God build our "house" then all that we do is done in vain.

It does not benefit us to worry ourselves day and night about how we will make ends meet or how we will pay the next bill that is due. Verse 2 tells us that it is useless and pointless to "eat the bread of sorrows".

So, stop worrying. Turn your "city" over to God and get some rest.

May God bless your day with peace in your heart, in the turmoil of this world.

Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more.

TWO WOLVES...

One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people. He said, "My son, the battle is between two wolves inside us all.

One is Evil. It is anger, selfishness, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.

The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith."

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: "Which wolf wins?"

The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed."

In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. Romans 6:11-12

Thought for the Day 5/10/2006

Trials to Triumph

Suffering, trials and tribulations
Are only working for our salvation.
If we had no trials in life,
And never had to deal with strife,
Then we would be self-content,
Forgetting from Whom all this good was sent.

Through our tribulations we learn
There is only One to whom we can turn,
Who lifts us up out of trouble,
Who guides us out of worldly rubble.

On our heavenly Father we must rely,
Give out thanks to Him on high,
That through our suffering we can have salvation,
If we live our lives for His glorification.
Then our trials become our joyfulness,
Our tribulations over come with thankfulness.

Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal.
--Hannah More

1 Corinthians 9:24-27 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air. No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.

Commandments for Anti-Worry!

1. Thou shall not worry, for worrying is the most unproductive of all human activities.

2. Thou shall not be afraid, for most things we fear never come to pass.

3. Thou shall not cross bridges before thou comest to them.

4. Thou shall not handle but one problem at a time, leaving the others to The Lord until their proper time.

5. Thou shall not take troubles to bed, for they make poor bedfellows.

6. Thou shall not try to carry the problems of the world on your shoulders, for only One hath a back that strong.

7. Thou shall be a good listener, for God often speaks through the mouths of others.

8. Thou shall not try to relive yesterday, for good or ill, it is gone forever. Live and rejoice in today.

9. Thou shall dismiss feelings of frustration, for they are rooted in self-pity and interfere with positive action.

10. Thou shall count thy blessings, never overlooking the smallest, for our biggest blessings are often composed of our smaller ones.

Thought for the Day 5/2/2006

Attitude depends on the way you look at things.
View every problem you encounter as an opportunity.
There is always a good side to every situation.
The optimist sees an opportunity in every misfortune.
The pessimist sees misfortune in every opportunity.
The optimist sees the doughnut,
the pessimist sees the hole.
You can develop success from every failure.
Discouragement and failure are two stepping stones to success.
No other elements can do so much for you if you're willing to study them and make them work for you.

Psalm 16:11 You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.

What will make you happy? Will that new car make you happy? Will that new home make you happy? How about a new job? What about a new spouse, will that make you happy?
It seems that there is always "something else" that will make us happy.

Then, after we have obtained that new object of our affection, we find that the happiness was temporary and we must find something else to sustain our happiness.

The psalmist reminds us in this scripture that everlasting happiness is found only with God. God has promised us a joy that can never fade if we will only follow the path that He has made for us.

Today, don't strive too much for temporary happiness. Strive to obtain the eternal happiness that can only be found through Him.
