Has God forgotten to be gracious?
Has he slammed the door on his compassion? [Psalm 77:9]

Psalm 77, written by Asaph, begins with a profound expression of anguish. The psalmist has found himself in a terribly difficult and painful situation. He has cried out to God, even shouting and praying all night. When he thinks of God, he moans with unfulfilled longing (77:1-3).

Then Asaph begins to ask questions that are stunning in their honesty:
 • “Has the Lord rejected me forever?
• Will he never again be kind to me?
• Is his unfailing love gone forever?
• Have his promises permanently failed?
• Has God forgotten to be gracious?
• Has he slammed the door on his compassion?” (77:7-9).

These six questions all can be answered by the simple word “No.” No, God has not rejected Asaph forever. No, God will not “never be kind” to him again. And so forth and so on. After all, when God revealed his essential nature and hallowed name to Israel, he made it clear that he is “The God of compassion and mercy! I am slow to anger and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness” (Exo 34:6). So why would Asaph wonder if God had forgotten to be gracious? And why would this question show up in the Psalms, the inspired word of God?

Psalm 77 models for us exceptional honesty in prayer. It shows us that God cares about our openness with Him. The Psalms in general, and Psalm 77 in particular, encourage us to pray with “no holds barred.” We don’t have to be afraid of asking God tough questions. In the context of this relationship we will discover, again and again, that God has not forgotten to be gracious. Yes, sometimes His grace seems strangely hidden. But we who know God through Christ can always be sure that nothing in all creation can separate us from God’s love and grace.

Psalm 76 celebrates the justice and strength of God, who "breaks the pride of princes and the kings of the earth fear Him" (76:12). He is truly "glorious," "even more majestic than the everlasting mountains" (76:4). The word translated here as "glorious" means, literally, "lighted up" or "shining". God's glory glows even more stunningly than the mountains at sunset.

The mountains are not there simply to impres us with their own glory. Rather they point to the One who made them, whose magnificence exceeds them beyond all measure. No doubt, God has given us the wonders of the natural world to delight us. Yet these gifts also serve to remind us of the even greater wonder of the Creator.

God's Word should be a daily part of our lives. This Psalm is a wonderful explanation of the true meaning and power of God's Word. Five characteristics of God's word are defined along with their effects upon our lives.

Enlightens our eyes,
Endures Forever.

We will find a great reward for keeping God's Word in our heart.

Two Days Without Worry
There are two days in every week about which we should not worry, two days which should be kept free from fear and apprehension.

One of these days is Yesterday with all its mistakes and cares, its faults and blunders, its aches and pains. Yesterday has passed forever beyond our control. All the money in the world cannot bring back Yesterday. We cannot undo a single act we performed; we cannot erase a single word we said. Yesterday is gone forever.

The other day we should not worry about is Tomorrow with all its possible adversities, its burdens, its large promise and its poor performance; Tomorrow is also beyond our immediate control. Tomorrow's sun will rise, either in splendor or behind a mask of clouds, but it will rise. Until it does, we have no stake in Tomorrow, for it is yet to be born.

This leaves only one day, Today. Any person can fight the battle of just one day. It is when you and I add the burdens of those two awful eternities, Yesterday and Tomorrow that we break down. It is not the experience of Today that drives a person mad, it is the remorse or bitterness of something which happened Yesterday and the dread of what Tomorrow may bring.

So let us, therefore, live but one day at a time.

Thought for the Day 6/12/2009

Undeniably, there are times when obeying God is hard, times when we’d much rather follow our own will than his. Even Jesus knew that experience as he wrestled with his Father’s will in the Garden of Gethsemane.

Yet there are also other times, times when doing God’s will is easy, even delightful. The sense of the Hebrew verb translated here as “I take joy” is experiencing pleasure. We receive pleasure from knowing that we are doing that which honors and glorifies God. Moreover, when we do what’s right, we feel a sense of well-being that comes from achieving our life’s purpose. We have been put on this earth to live for God’s glory. When we do it, we feel joy.

In this verse, David is not saying only that his thinking has been shaped by God’s law, but also that his emotions have been honed by God’s instructions. Thus he feels happy when he acts according to God’s will.

I would love to get to the place in life where I truly delight in doing what pleases the Lord, even those things that are not easy for me right now.

There are many reasons to worship God, more than I could possibly state in this reflection, or even in a thousand. At the core, we worship God because of who God is and what God has done. Our worship is a response to God, to his grace and mercy in our lives, as well as to his greatness and majesty.

Psalm 28:7 makes a specific connection between God’s work in our lives and our worship. This verse begins with a declaration of God’s power and protection. Because he is our “strength and shield,” therefore we trust him completely.

Yet God’s power is not just something we affirm. It is also something we experience. Thus the psalmist says, “He helps me, and my heart is filled with joy. I burst out in songs of thanksgiving.”

Our response to God’s gracious intervention in our lives is joy, a joy that leads to “songs of thanksgiving.” The more we experience and acknowledge God’s goodness to us, the less we will be able to keep it inside.

Joseph Henry used to tell a rather strange story about his childhood. His grandmother paid a cobbler to make him a pair of shoes.
The man measured his feet and told Joseph that he could choose between two styles: a rounded toe or a square toe. Little Joseph couldn’t decide. It seemed to be such a huge decision; after all, they would become his only pair of shoes for a long time.
The cobbler allowed him to take a couple of days to make up his mind. Day after day, Joseph went into the shop, sometimes three or four times a day! Each time he looked over the cobbler’s shoes and tried to decide. The round-toed shoes were more practical, but the square toes looked more fashionable. He continued to procrastinate. He wanted to make up his mind, but he just couldn’t decide.
Finally, one day he went into the shop and the cobbler handed him a parcel wrapped in brown paper. His new shoes! He raced home. He tore off the wrapping and found a beautiful pair of leather shoes – one with a rounded toe and other with a square toe!
Joseph learned a difficult lesson about decisions: if we don’t make them ourselves, others will make them for us. And wholeness in life can only come about when we take full responsibility for the choices we make.

Peace in the Storm
Years ago, a farmer owned land along the Atlantic seacoast. He constantly advertised for hired hands. Most people were reluctant to work on farms along the Atlantic. They dreaded the awful storms that raged across the Atlantic, wreaking havoc on the buildings and crops. As the farmer interviewed applicants for the job, he received a steady stream of refusals.

Finally, a short, thin man, well past middle age, approached the farmer. "Are you a good farm hand?" the farmer asked him."Well, I can sleep when the wind blows," answered the little man.

Although puzzled by this answer, the farmer, desperate for help, hired him. The little man worked well around the farm, busy from dawn to dusk, and the farmer felt satisfied with the man's work. Then one night the wind howled loudly in from offshore. Jumping out of bed, the farmer grabbed a lantern and rushed to the hired hand's sleeping quarters. He shook the little man and yelled, "Get up! A storm is coming! Tie things down before they blow away!" The little man rolled over in bed and said firmly, "No sir. I told you, I can sleep when the wind blows."

Enraged by the response, the farmer was tempted to fire him on the spot. Instead, he hurried outside to prepare for the storm. To his amazement, he discovered that all of the haystacks had been covered with tarpaulins. The cows were in the barn, the chickens were in the coops, and the doors were barred. The shutters were tightly secured. Everything was tied down. Nothing could blow away. The farmer then understood what his hired hand meant, so he returned to his bed to also sleep while the wind blew.

When you're prepared, spiritually, mentally, and physically, you have nothing to fear.
Can you sleep when the wind blows through your life? The hired hand in the story was able to sleep because he had secured the farm against the storm.

We secure ourselves against the storms of life by grounding ourselves in the Word of God. We don't need to understand, we just need to hold His hand to have peace in the middle of storms.

Luke 8:22-25 Now on one of those days Jesus and His disciples got into a boat, and He said to them, "Let us go over to the other side of the lake." So they launched out.
But as they were sailing along He fell asleep;
and a fierce gale of wind descended on the lake,
and they began to be swamped and to be in danger.
They came to Jesus and woke Him up, saying,
"Master, Master, we are perishing!"
And He got up and rebuked the wind and the surging waves,
and they stopped, and it became calm.
And He said to them, "Where is your faith?"
They were fearful and amazed, saying to one another,
"Who then is this, that He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey Him?"

Butterfly Struggles
Before a butterfly can emerge out of it's chrysalis it has to go through a lot of struggling.
Yes, struggling.
Each time it lunges out to escape, acids are being removed from its wings.
If someone were to come along and break the chrysalis open for it
then the butterfly would die from those acids.
In essence the struggle is necessary for the butterfly to survive.
Then in the stillness, when the struggle is over,
the butterfly can come out and share its beauty with the world.


We as humans are not any different.
There are times that we need to struggle,
to rid ourselves of the acids that make up sadness, fear, and anger.
It is only at this time when we are exhausted and still,
that we begin to hear God whisper to us.
